Tongue thrust is actually very common and can potentially cause problems with chewing, swallowing, and speech.

What does a tongue thrust look like?

By: FresherBreath

Thumb sucking can lead to a tongue thrust or reverse swallow. This habit can cause an orofacial muscular imbalance causing the tongue to protrude through the incisors during swallowing, speech, and while the tongue is at rest. The brain is conditioned to thrust the tongue forward even when the thumb is not inserted. This can have a negative impact on dentition causing the upper teeth to move forward and impacting the shape of the palate.
