Back-to-school season is full of excitement, but it’s also full of change - new teachers, new routines, and new schedules. For families already working on speech goals, these transitions can be a challenge.
Consistency is key in speech therapy. Skills strengthen with regular practice, and even small breaks can set progress back. The good news? Protecting your child’s speech routine during the busy back-to-school season doesn’t have to be overwhelming.
Here are three ways to keep speech goals on track:
Make it part of the daily routine. Attach speech practice to an activity you already do every day - like after snack time or before bath. Even 5–10 minutes is enough to reinforce skills and keep progress moving.
Communicate with teachers. Let your child’s teacher know about their speech goals. Share a quick note or email so they can help reinforce correct sounds during the school day. This also keeps everyone on the same page if new concerns arise.
Use the in-between moments. Car rides, morning chats, or lunchbox notes are great opportunities for quick practice. Ask your child to repeat target words, practice a tricky sound, or describe something they see.
Why this matters
Speech therapy works best when practice happens consistently, not just during sessions. By protecting those few minutes each day, you’re helping your child build confidence, accuracy, and ease in their communication.
Remember - progress, not perfection, is the goal. If things get off-track for a week or two, simply pick back up where you left off. And if you need fresh ideas for at-home practice, we’re always here to help.
