What Does a Speech-Language Pathologist Do?

Understanding Our Role and How We Support Families at Salt & Light

When parents begin to notice concerns with their child’s speech, language development, or oral habits, one of the first questions they often ask is:

“What exactly does a speech-language pathologist do?”

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are healthcare professionals who specialize in evaluating and treating disorders related to communication, swallowing, and oral function. While many people associate speech therapy primarily with articulation or pronunciation, the scope of practice for speech-language

pathology is actually quite broad.

SLPs are trained to assess and treat a wide range of areas including speech sound disorders, language development, social communication,

voice disorders, swallowing difficulties, feeding challenges, cognitive-communication disorders, and orofacial myofunctional disorders.

Because the field encompasses so many areas of expertise, individual practices, like ours, often focus on specific areas where they can provide the most specialized care.

Our Focus at Salt & Light Speech-Language Resources

At Salt & Light Speech-Language Resources, our practice focuses on several key areas where we are able to provide targeted support for families.

Our primary treatment areas include:

Speech Sound Disorders We work with children who have difficulty producing speech sounds clearly, which can impact their overall intelligibility and ability to communicate effectively with others.

Language Development Some children may struggle with understanding language, expressing their thoughts, forming sentences, or developing vocabulary. Speech-language therapy can help strengthen these foundational communication skills.

Swallowing and Oral Function SLPs are also trained to evaluate and treat swallowing disorders. This may include concerns related to oral coordination, tongue movement, or other aspects of oral function that influence eating, drinking, and overall health.

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders Our practice also provides specialized therapy to address concerns related to tongue posture, mouth breathing, oral habits, and muscle function of the face and mouth. These patterns can impact speech, dental development, breathing, and long-term oral health.

While speech-language pathology includes many additional areas of treatment, we intentionally focus our services in these specific areas so that we can provide the highest level of care and expertise for the families we serve.

Supporting Families Through Habit Elimination

One area that often overlaps with oral function and speech development is prolonged oral habits, such as thumb sucking or finger sucking.

While these habits are very common in early childhood, they can begin to affect oral development, dental alignment, and tongue posture if they persist for too long.

To support families navigating this transition, we offer our Thumbs Out Habit Elimination Program, which is designed to help children gently and successfully stop oral habits when they are developmentally ready.

We also recently created a free Habit Readiness Checklist to help parents determine whether their child may be prepared to begin the process.

Myofunctional Therapy and Treatment Packages

For children and individuals who demonstrate challenges related to oral function, tongue posture, or breathing patterns, we also offer orofacial myofunctional therapy.

This specialized therapy focuses on improving muscle coordination and functional patterns of the tongue, lips, and face. These patterns play an important role in speech, swallowing, breathing, and overall oral development.

Our practice offers structured myofunctional therapy packages designed to support individuals through the full therapy process. We understand that therapy is an investment for families, which is why we also provide payment options and financing plans to help make services more accessible.

If you would like to learn more about myofunctional therapy and the benefits we have a section of our website dedicated to this, you can use this link: https://www.saltandlight-slp.com/services-1

When Should Parents Seek an Evaluation?

One of the most common things we hear from families is that they were told to “wait and see” if their child would grow out of a concern.

While development can vary from child to child, early evaluation can provide important information and guidance. If you have concerns, having a qualified professional assess your child allows you to make informed decisions about the best path forward.

Speech-language pathologists are specifically trained to evaluate communication and swallowing concerns and determine whether intervention may be helpful.

Even when therapy is not immediately recommended, an evaluation can provide reassurance, education, and practical strategies for supporting your child’s development.

Supporting Families with Knowledge and Guidance

We understand that making the decision to schedule an evaluation can sometimes feel overwhelming. Parents are often navigating uncertainty and simply want to make the best choices for their child.

Our goal at Salt & Light Speech-Language Resources is to partner with families by providing clear information, guidance, and compassionate care.

Every child’s journey is unique, and we are honored to support families as they seek answers, develop a plan, and move forward with confidence.

If you have concerns about your child’s speech, language, swallowing, or oral function, we encourage you to reach out and learn more about how we may be able to help.

A Note from Amanda

As parents, it can sometimes feel overwhelming when you have questions about your child’s development. Many families wonder if they should wait, if their child will grow out of certain patterns, or if it might be time to seek additional support.

One of the most important things you can do is trust your instincts and seek guidance when concerns arise. Early information and thoughtful support can make a meaningful difference in helping children grow with confidence in their communication and overall development.

At Salt & Light Speech-Language Resources, it is our privilege to walk alongside families as they navigate these decisions. Whether you are exploring speech therapy, looking for guidance on oral habits, or simply wanting to learn more about your child’s development, we are here to provide education, encouragement, and support along the way.

We also offer additional resources for families through our online shop, including digital articulation cards designed to support speech practice at home, along with educational articles available throughout our blog.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your family’s journey.
